Active Release for the Calf

Active Release for the the calf muscles is a rapid method of releasing longstanding tension.  The calf is used as part of the standing mechanism and can become very tight and painful.  The deep muscles of the calf are also responsible for the tension, balance and coordination in the foot. These deep calf muscles are control the ability of the toes to contract. Actually, the muscle belly of the big toe is located just below the back of the knee.

The biggest issue that tight calves cause is a restriction in the normal range of motion of the ankle.  This reduction in movement creates a reduced ability to adapt to uneven or changing surfaces.  It can also predispose the ankle to increased injury during a slip or fall.
